The 2009-2010 Texas Bluebonnet Award Nominees

!±8± The 2009-2010 Texas Bluebonnet Award Nominees

The list below represents the nominees for the Texas Bluebonnet Award 2009-2010. At our local elementary school, in third grade the students may vote for their favorite if they have read at least 5 books from the Master List.

My daughter learned in third grade that all the books nominated are great. They also cover a wide variety of fiction and non-fiction writing including novels, poetry, picture books and chapter books. Some of the stories can be extremely controversial and bring out some strong emotions.

We have been known to laugh out loud or cry when reading some of these books. We have even become so outraged and upset that we wanted to stop reading a book, but we were so pulled in and invested in the story, we could not stop. Several of these have started some of our best discussions. These are the kind of books I love.

I have added several to my Books to Read list. I hope you look through the list below and choose to read some yourself or to your children. If you do, please comment below and let me know what you thought.

Texas Bluebonnet Award 2009-2010 Master List

The Penderwicks on Gardam Street by Jeanne Birdsall

The girls come up with a "Save Daddy Plan" so they will not have to have a stepmother. The plan: get him dates with women they know he will detest. Each girl also deals with her own situations such as Jane doing Skye's writing assignments, and Batty spying on the new neighbors.

All the children, including Don't Complain-Mandy Payne, Sit-Still-Seth Stevenson, and Lower-Your-Voice-A.J. Thomas, are his friends. There are some strange happenings going on, however, and Humphrey is worried about his friends. Especially frightening is the fear that Aldo the janitor is being replaced by an alien. For Humphrey it's SCARY, SCARY, SCARY.

Frogs by Nic Bishop

The reader can almost feel the slime in this photographic volume on frogs. The pictures are not only vastly informative, but the text also gives fascinating information on these amphibians. The combination of the two make for a book that increases one's knowledge and has the reader making a multitude of verbal responses when turning the pages-"Yuk!"; "How interesting"; "I didn't know that!"; and "WOW!"

Martina the Beautiful Cockroach: A Cuban Folktale by Carmen Agra Deedy

It is time for Martina Josefina Catalina Cucaracha, the beautiful muchacha, to find a husband. Her abuela tells her that she needs to give each suitor the "coffee on the shoes" test in order to find a good husband. Who will Martina choose? Will it be Don Gallo the rooster, Don Cerdo the pig, Don Lagarto the lizard or Perez the mouse? How does coffee help Martina? All these are questions answered in this delightfully illustrated Cuban folktale.

The Gollywhopper Games by Jody Feldman

Every morning on the ship she has the same thing for breakfast--oatmeal. Every morning she slyly tosses the oatmeal into the ocean. A little sea worm begins following the ship to get the tasty treat each day. He grows from thumbnail size to giant size on the trip across the ocean. Upon arrival in Scotland the worm followed the water, up a river, to Loch Ness. Can you guess what happens next?

Piper Reed: Navy Brat by Kimberly Willis Holt

This time they are moving from San Diego to Pensacola. Piper's older sister Tori thinks the Navy is ruining her life, and her younger sister Sam is a genius. Piper who loves the Navy life and has dyslexia sometimes feels that she does not fit. Despite all the differences there is plenty of love in this family.

What To Do About Alice?: How Alice Roosevelt Broke the Rules, Charmed the World, and Drove Her Father Teddy Crazy! By Barbara Kerley

Teddy Roosevelt famously said, "I can be President of the United States, or I can control Alice. I can't possibly do both." Alice Roosevelt, his oldest child, was hard to contain. She wanted to "eat up the world." Her idea of watching her siblings in the White House was to teach them how to slide down the stairway on trays. She had a pet snake and monkey that she showed off to visiting dignitaries, and despite her father's admonition to stay out of the news, she did just the opposite. Her father "was not amused." Just as Alice "ate up the world," reader's will eat up this book about Alice Roosevelt.

There are many hilarious scenes, including the chapter entitled "The Best Way to Avoid School" in which the entire class sneaks in to visit their classmate with chicken pox. Reading this book will cheer up the worst of days.

Two-Minute Drill by Mike Lupica

Max discovers that he, along with a few other children, have an ancient Celtic magic called Potential. As Potential children are being kidnapped, he and his fellow students at Rowan, the school for Potentials, must act to save the world from the powerful Evil. This is the first installment in The Tapestry series.

We Are the Ship: The Story of Negro League Baseball by Kadir Nelson

It's the illustrations that will first draw the reader to this book. Each page will be turned in admiration as one is introduced to the players, coaches, and teams of the Negro Baseball League. The narration is equally admirable. Nelson explains that the narrator is "a collective voice, the voice of every player, the voice of we." Readers feel as if they are sitting in their den listening to the stories being told. The pain of segregation and the joy of playing the game will be felt by all who board this Ship.

There have been many children's books published about the Statue of Liberty but never one like this. Through free verse and illustrations that put the reader in the events, The Lady's biography is told. Each double page spread tells of people involved in the process of bringing her to New York Harbor-from the idea, to the creation of the statue, to the pennies sent in by children across the United States to pay for her base, to the celebration of her placement. The reader will look upon The Lady with new eyes whether in New York viewing her or bringing her to the mind's eye.

Henry is good at following the rules, but Maybelle gives way to temptation when the Peabody's have a dinner party. When she ends up on the spoon of one of the guests, the hilarity begins. Never has a cockroach been such a welcome diversion.

To top things off, she has just won a poetry contest, and the prize is enrollment in a poetry workshop. Her life could not be better-until her father (who always jokes) gets serious; he and her mother talk quietly together. She is afraid her parents are getting a divorce. The good news is that they are not, but the bad news is that her father lost his job. Diana's family will have to move. Told in simple free verse, Diana experiences the feelings of loss and acceptance. It is appropriate that the first and last poems are both entitled "Where I Live."

Help Me, Mr. Mutt! by Janet Stevens and Susan Stevens Crummel

When humans have a problem, they write Dear Abby; but the best help for the suffering canine is Mr. Mutt. Each troubled hound is given doggone good advice-all of which ends with a P.S. suggesting that the family cat is less than a worthy pet. Of course, Mutt's family cat The Queen comes back with her own thoughts on this. By the end of the book, Mr. Mutt and The Queen come to blows, and our canine advisor must be rescued by his fans. There are plenty of laughs for both pets and their humans.

Milada struggles to remember her grandmother's words to her on her eleventh birthday, "Remember who you are, Milada. Remember where you are from. Always."

Football - Ultimate Tailgaters Supply List

!±8± Football - Ultimate Tailgaters Supply List

For years now, tailgating parties have been a regular part of all college and professional football games. People spend a lot of time and effort on putting together the best tailgate parties possible. Some will spend literally thousands of dollars over the course of a football season on these parties alone. Football tailgating parties before the big game can be a lot of fun.

The one thing that can take the fun away from these pre-game parties is to forget something important. You always want to be sure you're prepared. Write yourself up a checklist and include everything you want to have on it. That brings up the question of, what are some of the supplies you need? What will make the tailgating experience an enjoyable one before the big football game? Here is a list of many different items to consider bringing along to your next tailgating party.

Bar-B-Gater This is a pull behind trailer that hooks up to your trailer hitch. It contains a huge cookout grill with all your cooking supplies in one place. It makes cooking out so easy. Another great thing about having one of these is that you can simply unhook from it once you get back home.

Tables & Chairs You will need plenty of space to sit out all of food and supplies for your party. You will also need the room to sit down and eat. Folding tables and chairs take up a minimal amount of space and can be easily stored in your vehicle.

Portable Canopy or Awning Keep the food and yourself, out of the elements with a portable tent. E-Z Up has several portable canopies that are extremely quick and easy to set up anywhere you go. They break down and store in a cloth bag and take up very little space.

Portable Restroom Having your own portable restroom can be very important during any football tailgate party. You can find units available with easy to set up walls that offer all the privacy you need. They also make it easy to pack back up and store.

Storage Bag / Trunk Organizers Keeping your supplies together in a convenient way makes any tailgating party much more enjoyable. You can purchase one of these organizers and have your supplies kept in a neat fashion that will allow you to know where things are at when you need them.

TailGator Gas Powered Blender No need for electricity with this gas powered blender. It is great for mixing up those favorite frozen drinks at the football game.

Car Flags and Banners Don't forget these so everyone knows you're having a party and you're excited about your favorite team.

Pyrex Portable Food Carrier This is nice for keeping all your cooked foods in without the mess. It also makes it very nice for storing your leftovers after the party.

Some other supplies to be sure to have on hand include, towels, trash bags, water, napkins, first aid kit and all your utensils.

Try to make things simple for your next football pre-game tailgate party. Plan ahead and prepare the day before the party. Have all of your supplies ready for your party. This will allow your tailgating party to be a memorable one. Most of all.have fun!

The Story of Bra Spider's Enjoyment of Bra Cunny Rabbit's Flight of Success

!±8± The Story of Bra Spider's Enjoyment of Bra Cunny Rabbit's Flight of Success

Bra Spider and Bra Cunny Rabbit have always been friends. So close were they that not a day passed without one of them calling on the other. But of the two, Bra spider was the least educated, for he was greatly reluctant to go to school and improve himself. So in effect he never attended any school whatsoever. Whenever he was sent to school, he would swear and protest as if he was going to be lynched. In his heart he felt it was useless and a sheer waste of time. So while his friend Bra Cunny Rabbit took delight in going to school and in learning, in general, Bra Spider remained out in the street playing football. In spite of this the two still remained good friends. After Bra Cunny Rabbit returned from school, he and his friend would play together for some time.

Time went on as Bra Cunny Rabbit continued going to school regularly, leaving his friend lagging behind him. So he learnt much from his teachers which he accumulated and stored for 'tomorrow'. Bra Spider on the other hand continued ceaselessly skipping school. He would rather play in street corners from morning until such time when he reckoned the school day would be over than endure the ordeal he felt school offered him.. Then he would return quietly home as if he was returning from school. He repeated this trick on a daily basis. Whilst he continued his truancy, his friend continued profiting from his lessons at school. Year after year, things went on in the same old way. Bra Cunny Rabbit brought home at the end of each year unfaltering news of success in his exams. Bra Spider, on the other hand, kept playing a game of hide and seek with his parents. For he had nothing good like his friend to report back.

After five years of sheer hard work, Bra Rabbit sat to his School Certificate Examination. By that time not much flesh was left on him as he had been going through almost endless sleepless nights for his strongest desire was to come out with nothing but the best. So he drilled himself on all the subjects he had to take on a regular basis. At the end of that strict regime he was satisfied with his effort and thus confident of a resounding victory at the end. He then resumed playing football with his friend Bra Spider once more after a long break. They had great fun together. But often Bra Spider who was always on top of things in the field of play would taunt him," Say, bookworm." But Bra Cunny Rabbit would just quietly play on without paying much heed to his taunts. Soon, he was fully accepted again.

Eventually, when the results were released Bra Cunny Rabbit came out tops. He had the best result of all. He felt so proud of his great achievement. He almost went mad with joy and a sense of accomplishment as almost everyone kept commending his efforts. Cunny Rabbit's parents now carried their head right up in the community as every other person was full of admiration for him as they kept congratulating him and his parents. But his happiness and joy became a source of embarrassment, pain and torment to his friend who now secretly was beginning to regret not having followed the good examples of his friend. As his pain and regrets grew more persistent, Bra Spider started dodging his friend, for he didn't know how to cover up his real feelings of jealousy and hatred for the success of his friend.

Bra Cunny Rabbit's joy mounted even further when a few days later he was awarded a UNESCO BURSARY to enable him to pursue further studies at Amherst College in the United States of America.

Bra Cunny Rabbit's parents now carried their head even higher in the town as they were very happy and hopeful for the progress of their son. They spoke with great pride about him to everyone they met or who met or visited them. They were now the centre of attention as others joined them in sharing their joy and thanksgiving. But not everyone was happy. Others there were like Bra Spider's parents who reacted less enthusiastically. But then their anger at their son's failure to perform was expressed in very harsh terms: 'Where were you all the time that you could not do as well as your friend? Did someone sit on your brain?"

"The teacher didn't like me, that's why he failed me."

"Shut up with that nonsense, you big liar. He didn't like you? What sort of useless excuse is that one? Is that why you should have no result?....Let's accept the fact that he really doesn't like you. Is he the only teacher in the school that his word should prevail over that of others in the school?"

"He made all the other teachers not to like me ma."

"Because you're a bloody idiot, perhaps. That's why they'd all gang up against you. Just get away from my sight before I box you to death you more than useless thing."

Bra Spider's pain, shame, regret and worries thus multiplied. He stood around, behind the house brooding over his unhappiness. Then summing up courage, he swore, "To hell with it, after all I could still be a footballer and make it in life."

With that encouraging thought, Bra Spider skipped off to join his friends playing football in a nearby plot of land.

'Eh Bra Spider!" Bra Dog shouted as he saw him, "You must be feeling lonely now, eh?"

"Why?" Bra Spider asked, confused and puzzled as to what was being suggested.

"Come on, stop pretending as if you do not know that you are soon going to be missing a friend."

"Truly I don't know a thing, except if you could care to hint me now."

"Do you want me to believe that you don't know that your friend, Bra Cunny Rabbit is just about to leave these shores for further studies overseas?"

The thought of separating from his friend added further to his anguish. But still, he didn't want to believe it was true. Then his friends started taunting him. That worsened his situation even further. The slightest chance that he saw he used to sneak away stealthily. But flight and escape did little to alleviate his plight. He became more dejected and depressed. The only way now he thought that was left to redeem his mind from being sunk into permanent depression and dementia was through his friend, Bra Cunny Rabbit. There was the only place where he was certain of being listened to with a sympathetic ear and get help possibly.

Soon enough, he announced himself at Bra Cunny Rabbit's house just as he was about to go out. Almost breathless, Bra Spider greeted his friend and asked, with the hope that it would be denied. "My good friend, how true is it that you're going to study abroad? This is what I've been hearing all around and which I found difficult to believe since you have not told me of it." Having said that Bra Spider stood back looking anxiously towards his friends' mouth whilst his worried heart kept pounding like a tumba.

"It's very much true, Bra Spider, I'm very sorry I wasn't able to tell you earlier, but that's the situation I suddenly found myself in: preparing to go abroad for further studies."

"Do, Bra Cunny Rabbit, please have pity on me, please don't go away. I'd be left alone. You should know that I have no other friend besides you," Bra Spider whose face was already drenched in tears kept pleading.

Bra Cunny Rabbit was visibly touched in seeing his friend for once in his life feeling regret, dejection and worry. But what could he do now to help him, he wondered. He thought hard about it, but he could think of no feasible plan. Then he thought of swaying his mind away by convincing him that his travelling was not as enviable as he was thinking.

"My friend Bra Spider, don't envy my situation, for if you should know how I'd be travelling, you'd prefer to stay home safely. My friend, truly it's not easy."

Raising his head up, he saw Bra Spider now crying bitterly, so he knew his method has not worked. To control him, Bra Cunny Rabbit promised, "Okay, my friend stop crying, ya. And don't you worry. Just wait until tomorrow and see what I'll do for you."

"Eh? Are you going to take me along with you? Are you, Bra Rabbit?"

"Ah, you just wait me, Bra Spider."

"So long as you do not leave me behind, I'm prepared to do all that you may require me to do for you."

Bra Cunny Rabbit started preparing very early the next morning. He put his clothing in a big bundle. He remembered the advice 'make an impression.' So, immediately dressed and suffused in the fragrance of Old Scotch Cologne, he carried his luggage along. Bra Spider almost collided into him shouting,'Bra Rabbit, Bra Rabbit, remember you promised to take me along, eh. Remember?"

"Well, if you say so I'll not deny you. But I can't remember making any such promise to you. But since you are insisting, and only on those terms, I'll have no alternative. But I must again warn - if only you know how I'd be travelling there.!"

"Fine, provided you're prepared to be up in this bundle of clothes."

Bra Spider though frightened at the thought, summoned enough courage to give it a try. He was thus thrown into the bundle and tied up neatly along with the clothes. With the bundle containing Bra Spider slung over his shoulder, Bra Cunning Rabbit set forth on his journey. He walked briskly ahead as the weight was weighing him down. To ease the pain and the strain on his shoulders he kept shifting the load from his left to the right. But as he went further the weight became more and more unbearable. Besides, Bra Cunny Rabbit was already grumbling.

"Please be patient, we'll soon get there," Bra Spider pleaded.

"You don't even know where we're going to. I alone know how far it is left to go," Bra Cunny Rabbit replied.

"But I do hope it's not too far to the end."

"Sorry, there's still a long way to go." So they continued quietly but patiently, sweating through all the way under the scorching heat of the sun. Then at last they arrived at the airport where they waited for some time to check in. Bra Spider kept wriggling uneasily within the suffocating bundle meanwhile. Then within forty five minutes a Boeing 707 flight landed at the tarmac.

"What's that? What's that? Are we safe? Aren't we about to be killed?". Bra Spider kept demanding from inside the safe abode of his bundle.

"Shhh! Be quiet! Or they'll soon notice or suspect that you're in there. It's the plane that's landing. Please don't say anything at all, don't even shake, you hear? Just remain still and quiet, ya!"

Bra Spider numbed his muscles, remaining as still as if he were death itself buried in the village graveyard. Bra Cunny Rabbit went through customs and immigration swiftly without any hitch. His luggages were now being weighed and scanned. His heart was limping within him as it went through the process. But he kept fearing that his luggage might be opened and his friend discovered. So he kept praying and praying for God to avert such a possibility. Indeed, God did help him. His luggage was okayed. He was allowed to take his bundle as hand luggage. So with it held in his hand, he mounted the flight craft and emerged in the splendour of the aircraft cabin. Then the loud complaints of Bra Spider erupted.

Bra Rabbit had cause now to untie the bundle to have the spider that was imprisoned within it released. The sooner the knot was unwound Bra Spider sprang out like a spring kept on hold. So sharp and violent was his breakout that the whole plane was set in agitation. Take off was thus delayed to allow the airport authorities to come in and inspect as well as investigate. Bra Cunny Rabbit vehemently protested his innocence and ignorance. He maintained that he didn't know of it until when he heard an unusual sound just then upon entering the plane. Bra Spider was thus arrested and whisked off to the nearby police station where he was held for some time in a cell.

Bra Spider thus missed yet another chance in life. Not to be totally left out after his release, he has enrolled at the Lumley trade centre learning building skills.

Quarterback Drills

!±8± Quarterback Drills

I was talking with a Major college football recruiter and I asked him what they look for in a High School Quarterback. He stated 4 things! The first thing they look for in a quarterback is mental and physical toughness. The second thing they look for is the QB footwork. The third thing they look for is Vision. And lastly is the arm strength to make all of the quarterback throws. If a quarterback has those four of these abilities then you might just get a football scholarship!

A lot of mental toughness comes with football classroom work. One of the most underrated phases of quarterback training is in the football film room and the chalkboard. Most teams give the quarterback scouting reports that the coaches will review with them. Many teams after reviewing scouting reports have the quarterbacks write down the different passing plans. Such as the goal line package, the 2 minute offense package, the 3rd down package. the no huddle package if you have one, the first down passing package. From this list you will usually have 2-4 plays picked and reviewed.

So as you can see a Quarterback must spend some time learning how to read defenses! I see that there are now quarterback training websites that sell Quarterback How To Read Defenses DVDs. I strongly suggest any serious QB get them!

Quarterback footwork can be developed in many ways. Jumping rope, Jumping Benches and Boxes. Playing soccer, playing tennis, playing basketball, ladder drills, hurdle drills. Again there are some great low cost football training DVDs out there you can buy on the internet. Just search quarterback training DVDs or football training DVDs.

Nest is vision, this is skill all great quarterbacks must have. You must be able to read defenses, find the open receiver and make the throw! The first part of reading defenses is identifying the pass coverage. Is it cover 2, cover 3, Man to man, Zone, or a combination type pass defense, or is a blitz coming? Again all QBs must put some time in the classroom study film and learning to read defenses!

Lastly, all quarterbacks at the higher levels have a strong enough arm to make all of the passing throws in a passing tree. The typical routes include a quick out, quick slant or quick hitch.

The passing tree includes 3 step drops, The typical routes include a quick out, quick slant or quick hitch. 5 step drops, with typical routes are curl, out, in. And 7 step drop or shotgun, with typical routes being the deep in, deep out, comeback, post and go route.

This passing tree and the throws used are the bread and butter used by all college and NFL coaches or scouts. If you want to play quarterback you must learn these throws. You can attend a quarterback camp or again there are some great low cost quarterback passing drills DVD that you can buy on the internet to see more detailed quarterback drills.

This article may be reprinted as long as the resource box information is included.

Quarterback Camps

!±8± Quarterback Camps

I am a former NFL Quarterback that was an 8th round draft choice by the Buffalo Bills in 1980, and today I want to talk about Quarterback Camps.

I got a phone call from a father who had a son and was looking for a Passing Camp, and he wanted to know if I might be able to recommend a QB Camp?

So after doing some Google research and making some phone calls, there are over 10 Quarterback camps that I found that looked interesting.

Some are location based, i.e. just one location, some are regional and some are national.

They all seemed to offer similar quarterback training.

They all start with the Quarterback center exchange and stance. And work into the different drops and footwork needed.

Most teach the all the different types of drops and throws that all Quarterbacks must learn.

The 3, 5, 7 step drop plus shotgun. Most also go over the typical quarterback passing tree.

These are the routes and throws that all quarterbacks will be making in a game.

For 3 step drops the passing routes will be: Quick Slant, Quick Out, Hitch, Slip Screen.

For the 5 step drop the passing routes are: curl, 10 yard out, 10 yard in, Quick Post.

For the 7 step drop or shotgun the throws that are taught are: the deep out, the comeback, the deep in or dig route, the post, and the go route.

From there most progress to work with quarterback passing mechanics. The football grip, the football position while you are doing your drops, and the release.

Once these basic fundamentals are covered the passing camps start to teach passing drills.

I personally know of 36 different quarterback passing drills that you can practice on.

Some of the Quarterback practice drills are:

1. The Elway Scrabble Drill

2. The Garbage Can Drill

3. The Goal Post Drill

4. The Quick Feet Drill

5. Long Ball Drill

Most quarterback drills cover four major categories:

Quarterback Fundamentals

Quarterback Footwork

Quarterback Passing Accuracy

Developing Quarterback Arm Strength

Some of the higher priced Camps will also cover quarterback defense reads techniques and actual film room study.

Most of the Quarterback camps that I found during my search were in the price range of 9-9 for a 1 day quarterback camp to the top of the line 3-4 days quarterback camp costing 9-9.

For those of you parents or football players that can't afford that or have time constraints you can find the same information taught at these football camps on Quarterback Training DVD's at half the price usually under .00!!!

If you were like me, I always wanted to get my hands on any type of quarterback training that might help me to get better.
